What is a PMHNP, and how is that different from a psychiatrist?
A Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is a board-certified advanced practice nurse who can evaluate, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions, including prescribing medication. Maryland has granted full practice authority to nurse practitioners since 2015, meaning a PMHNP can practice independently without physician oversight.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. We’re in-network with major insurance plans through Headway, which handles verification of your specific benefits before you book.
What if I don’t have insurance, or want to pay out of pocket?
Self-pay is available. Initial evaluations are $150 and follow-up visits are $99. We accept major credit cards and most HSA/FSA cards, and can provide receipts you may submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement. You can book directly through Headway either way.
Is telehealth as effective as in-person psychiatric care?
For most psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and follow-up care, telehealth is a well-established and effective way to receive treatment. It also removes barriers like travel time, making consistent follow-up easier for many people.
What technology do I need for a visit?
A smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a private space where you can talk openly.
Can you prescribe controlled substances, like ADHD medication, through telehealth?
Under current DEA rules, controlled substances can be prescribed via telehealth without a prior in-person visit; this flexibility is currently authorized through the end of 2026. Any prescribing decision is based on a thorough evaluation, not the visit format.
